Knitting and Sewing (and a Craftsy Class Giveaway)!

WIP- Maeva Socks

New sewing machine.

New sewing machine!

Beginning of a fabric stash.

This week…

Knitting :: My Maeva socks… some of you might recall that I cast these on for the Ravellenic games, but didn’t finish them in time. I’m about halfway into the foot of the second sock, so I’m going to try to finish these this week so that they can be my March socks for my 12 Socks in 2014 challenge. (Rav link)

Reading :: Cosmo by Spencer Gordon. This is another short story collection for my CanLit course. I’ve just started it but I like it so far… it’s a fairly recent work so all of the cultural references are contemporary. I might get to meet the author in a few weeks, which would be really interesting.
I also finished Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman this week. I quite liked it- the setting was really interesting and the plot was good. The main character wasn’t great (he was kind of boring) but overall I’d recommend it.

Watching :: Series 2 of The Bletchley Circle… if you haven’t seen this show, you really should- it’s awesome! It’s about a group of British women who were codebreakers during World War 2, who go on to solve crimes in London in the 1950s. Superbly done, great acting, and gorgeous costumes and sets.
Season 2 of Motive. I had kind of forgotten about this show but season 2 just started airing and it’s still quite good. It’s a crime show set in Vancouver, and it’s set up so that you know who the killer is at the beginning of each episode, and then the focus (as the title suggests) is on figuring out the motive for the crime.

And as you might have noticed in the above photos… I bought a sewing machine! I figured that nearly two years of living away from home warranted me having my own. I bought it used and just picked it up yesterday. I’ve even got the very beginning of a fabric stash (to complement my yarn stash)! One of my goals is to learn to make a quilt, so I’ve been watching the free Intro to Quilting class on Craftsy… I can’t wait to choose fabric and get started!

In fact, in celebration of crafting month, Craftsy is giving one of my readers the chance to win a free class! In keeping with my current project, I’ve selected the Toe-up Socks class (40.99$ value), so you can create your own awesome socks! Craftsy has their own giveaway system so it’s really easy to enter. You’ll just need to click here to be entered to win the Craftsy class! If you don’t already have a Craftsy account, you’ll be prompted to make one- it’s completely free and gives you access to lots of great resources, patterns, and inspiration. The giveaway will be open until March 31st (Monday) at 11:59pm.
This giveaway is now closed, thank you for all of your entries! The winner will be announced shortly.

Let me know in the comments what you are currently knitting and reading! Happy Tuesday!

Linking up with KCCO and Yarn-Along as usual.

YAY! Yay sewing machine! I was telling my mum how excited you were, and we both agreed that it was super cute. Congrats on your purchase 😀

    • Haha, thanks… I am maybe disproportionately excited.
Now I can make ALL the things 🙂
P.S. That was quick… I posted this like 30 secs ago!

  2. I am so wanting a new sewing machine! I have an old Bernina, while a work horse of a sewing machine, not very fancy. LOL. Enjoy your new hobby. I don’t need to be entered into the craft class, I know how to knit socks already. Just wanted to comment on your find.

    • Thanks Chris! Mine’s not super fancy… I think it’s from 2005 but its previous owner only used it once, so it’s new-to-me 🙂
No problem with the giveaway- you won’t be entered unless you click the giveaway link!

  3. ooo envious of your sewing machine. I’ve been quietly lusting after one for years although I fear I would very quickly end up with a fabric stash to match my yarn stash :-S

Your socks look nice 🙂 Just added the pattern to my favourites, thanks for linking it

    • Thanks! I fear that may happen as well, but I can never resist another hobby 🙂
Maeva is a great pattern, and free as well… happy knitting!

  4. I got a sewing machine last summer and I love it – this from someone who has absolutely zero sewing experience!

    • I expect I’ll love using it as well… i just have to try not to accumulate too much fabric and thread 🙂

  5. Ironically I am working on my first pair of toe-up socks now so if I win that class it will be most helpful! I have a sewing machine but have no idea how to use it. I keep saying I will learn one day.

    • What a coincidence! I love toe-up socks. Good luck 🙂
Sewing machines have a bit of a learning curve but once you’ve got the basics down it’s all smooth sailing! Totally worth it too!

  6. I think the last time I sewed on a sewing machine was in the 8th grade and I STILL had to have my home economics teacher help me. I am a hopeless case. 😉

    • Haha! I’m pretty sure my mum got pretty tired of all of the questions and requests for help when I was a kid too.
I caught on eventually though 🙂

  7. Congrats on the sewing machine. I’m sure you will have many fine years of quilting. Enjoy!

  8. congratulations on your sewing machine! i see many happy hours in your future! your socks look beautiful!

    • Thanks so much, Lori! Happy knitting and sewing 🙂

  9. I just finished my Soay cardigan and now am making a dent on a shawl: 22.5 degrees by Martina Behm!

    • Hi Monica!
I love the 22.5 Degrees pattern… I made a pink one for my sister for Christmas 2 years ago. The scalloped edging is so cute!
I’ll have to go take a look at your cardi- sounds lovely!
      Happy knitting!

  10. Joy Joy

I should be exclaiming all over your lovely knitting and stash, which *are* lovely, but I’m *so* happy to find some new things to watch. The Bletchley Circle sounds like something I would love. I strung out Lark Rise to Candleford for as long as I could…

    • Haha, no worries- I love TV recommendations!
I’d highly recommend Bletchley. It’s on Netlfix too if that’s one of the ways you watch TV.
I keep hearing excellent things about Lark Rise… perhaps it’ll be next on my list 🙂

  11. Goodness me your socks are lovely. I have long wanted to knit socks but shy away for fear of second sock syndrome 🙂 perhaps I should try and win the giveaway for that extra push I seem to need.
Have a beautiful week and enjoy your sewing.

    • Aww, thank you!
Socks are such a great portable project… I love them!
You could always try two-at-a-time if you’re worried about SSS. I used to be pretty bad about finishing the second sock but I’ve gotten better recently!

  12. […] a couple of housekeeping things today: Firstly, the winner of the Craftsy class giveaway as chosen by is #22, Sollertia! Congratulations and enjoy! (Craftsy will be in touch […]
