Hello friends! I promise I’m still alive, the past few months have just been insanely busy. Fortunately, classes are done and I’ve finished all but one of my final exams and assignments, so I’m slowly getting back into doing things that aren’t schoolwork. A few general life updates for you today:

1. We’re moving! We’ve found a new apartment, and I’m so excited to move in at the beginning of next month. I cannot express how happy I am to be moving from a basement into a place with lots of windows and lots of light. We even have a balcony, so I’ll be planting some veggies in containers (I’ve actually already started some of the seeds). I’m really looking forward to being able to blog more often, and with the better photos… expect to see a lot more of me around here in the next few months!

2. I am so excited to announce that I’m starting a business this summer! I’ve won a grant and it’s going to make it possible for me to do some really cool stuff in the upcoming months. I can’t tell you too much yet, but I can tell you that it will involve some very special yarn and some very special dyes, and you’ll be able to buy the yarn starting in May. More news to come in the next few weeks, and the launch should be sometime around the second week of May.

How have you been the past few months? I’d love to hear about any updates in your lives!

So close.

I am so close to being finished my exams… one more tomorrow! It’s in the evening until 10pm, which isn’t great, but after that I’m off for the summer (and to find a job)! I’m also moving on Saturday (back to my parents’ house for the summer), so the next few days are going to be busy ones.

Appropriately, I also finished my exam socks today! I made these up as I went along, but they’re pretty basic- toe-up, short row heel with gusset, and 1″ of ribbing at the top. I also made these quite tall, I worked even for about 5″ after the heel. The yarn is Lion Brand Sock-Ease in 133 Circus Peanut. This was my first time using this yarn and it’s a pretty average sock yarn. What I really loved about this skein was the colour! It’s so bright and cheery for spring, which was much needed today as we got the annual ‘I thought we were done with this’ April snowstorm.

These are also my (very late) March socks for my 12 socks in 2014 challenge, since I never finished the socks I cast on in March. I’m hoping to finish another pair this month so I’ll be back on track!

I haven’t been doing a lot of reading this week outside of my coursework, but I have been sneaking in a few pages of House Girl by Tara Conklin when I have a spare moment. It’s a great novel, and I’m really liking how the historical and modern timelines play off each other.

Let me know in the comments what you’re currently knitting and reading! If any of you are also writing finals, good luck! Have an amazing day.

Reading and knitting

Lion Brand Sock in "Circus peanut"

This week, I’m…

Knitting :: Exam socks… with the start of finals this week, I knew I was going to need a simple project for any stress knitting emergencies. These are just basic toe-up socks in Lion Brand Yarn Sock-Ease (colourway 133 “circus peanut”). I love how bright these are going to be… perfectly cheery for spring! I’ve just started the second sock so I hope to finish these this week. I’m sure there are lots of toe-up sock recipes out there, but I could share mine sometime if there is any interest.

Reading :: The no. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. I started this forever ago but never finished it… I had forgotten how good it is! I really enjoy his writing style.

I’m also reading House Girl by Tara Conklin on my kindle. As I mentioned on Saturday, I’m loving this book. I really like the two storylines and the characters are great. I can’t wait for exams to be over so I can get into it properly.

Watching :: Season 1 of Elementary (still really enjoying this!) and looking forward to watching The Great British Sewing Bee season finale tonight! (It’s already aired in Britain but I’m going to wait for it to be up online to watch).

Let me know in the comments what you’re knitting, reading, and watching! Have a lovely day.

This weekend.

Rainy weekend

Winter abundance bowl

Aloe Vera shoots

Tea and homework

This weekend I’m enjoying…

House Girl by Tara Conklin. I’m only about 1/4 of the way through this but I can already tell it’s going to be one of my favourite books of this year.
– Season 1 of Elementary. I was a bit hesitant about this at first because, well, another modernized Sherlock adaptation? But I actually quite like it.
– Pom Tango and Peaches and Cream teas from the David’s Tea spring collection
– The sauce from this Winter Abundance Bowl recipe
– A few new-to-me blogs: Small Fish, Sew Knit Grow, and Bluebirds of Happiness
– Heather’s new kitchen and food-related link up. I’ll definitely be doing this in future weeks… what a great idea!

I’ve got 4 exams this week and next so I might not be around as much… if you’ve left a comment or sent an e-mail, please be patient- I will reply eventually!

Let me know in the comments below what you’re enjoying right now… I hope you are all having a lovely weekend!

(None of this is sponsored… just things I like.)

Out and About

I’m desperately trying to¬†write exams and move all at the same time. I’ll be back to regular posts next week, but in the meantime, here are some photos taken while wandering and enjoying the lovely weather with C.

I hope you are all having warm weather too. I’ll be back soon!

A few photos to share this Friday. Follow me on Instagram @kyliem_w for more throughout the week.

Cafeteria at my university… It’s hard to believe I’ll only be eating in here for one more week!

Lots of time at the library this week. Thankfully the view from the fifth floor is pretty great.

Spring tea… yum!

Blurry, but isn’t he the cutest?

Pumpkin muffins… in totally the wrong season. They were delicious, I’ll share more about the recipe in the days to come.

My parents live right beside a conservation area… as much as I love the big city, I’ve definitely missed this and I’m looking forward to a summer here!

Have a great weekend!

Spring is coming… (notice the lack of snow!)

Bright paper flowers to encourage the warmer weather.

I am SO happy that the sun is setting later and later. I was walking home around 7:30 and the sun was just setting. So lovely.

Tuesday afternoon at the museum.

Totem pole staircase at the museum… I actually love the Canada wing, it’s one of my favourites. Apparently it’s not very popular though as it’s always very quiet. Antiquities and biodiversity are usually very busy… interesting.

Aftermath of crafting at craft club today!

I hope you are all having a great week… happy Friday!

Signs of Spring (plus an LPOAS pattern sale!)

March was sort of a miserable month here. I think it snowed more days this month than it was sunny, and it felt like, well, still winter. Fortunately it looks like we are going to have a gorgeous weekend. I was about 10 degrees today and sunny… so lovely! A couple of friends and I took advantage of the nice weather and wandered around town for a bit this afternoon. Lots of shops were closed since it’s Good Friday, but many little fruit stands and the like were open in Koreatown.

In fact, to celebrate the arrival of spring, Easter weekend, and the last week of classes, I’ve decided to have a little LPOAS pattern sale! You can use the code welcomespring2013 for 15% all LPOAS patterns and ebooks for the next week. The sale ends on Friday, April 5th at midnight. If you enjoy the sale, please feel free to share the image below with your friends! Click here to go to my Ravelry store to see the patterns.

Spring pattern sale!

I’ve been doing a lot of knitting lately, but I can’t show you any of it because it’s all design work. Soon though! In the meantime, here are some photos from our stroll today and from Craft Club on Thursday, where we made paper flowers- perfect for spring!

Spring, finally!

I hope you all have a lovely (and warm) weekend! Happy Easter to those who celebrate it.

Did you see the recipe I posted on Tuesday? It’s the first one I’ve published here so I’m pretty excited about it.

Sharing some quick Instagram shots today. Happy Friday!

My beautiful dog… I’ll get to see him again in just a few weeks!

Weekly craft club… making tissue paper flowers. And having tea, of course.

Rainy night… I took this at about 8:00pm and it had just gotten dark. I am so happy that it’s brighter in the evenings!

An afternoon of tea and crime and punishment!

Late night sushi (for when you forget to have dinner because you’re writing a history paper…)

Studying classics. Exams are only 3 weeks away so it’s getting close to crunch time!

The first day of spring… more like still winter!

Those weeks

It has been one of those weeks. After missing pretty much everything last week thanks to the flu, this week was a flurry of trying to catch up without falling further behind. With finals approaching in 3 weeks (wait, what?), it is crunch time. So, after writing this, I will drag myself to the library rather than staying in bed all day in my PJs eating shreddies straight from the box. The conclusion you can draw from this is that I am a responsible adult. Sort of.

The result of having such a crazy week is that I have done almost no knitting. I’ve knit a few squares for the colourful blanket of craziness, and I’m working on some charts for some designs based on a film I saw last night (Stoker- very creepy but incredibly well done). I did go to craft club this week, where we made studded bracelets, so I can share some photos from that.

On a completely unrelated note, with the impending demise of Google Reader, I’ve transferred all of my stuff over to Bloglovin’. In the process I also did something which makes it possible for you to subscribe to LPOAS over there. Here is a giant button you can click (come on, you know you want to!) to do just that:
