Lately, I’ve been…

Knitting :: My grace cardigan, again… there were a lot of problems with this project, and I had set it aside for a few months. After taking another look, I wasn’t happy with the gauge or the fit so I ripped out and started over. I really love both this yarn and pattern, so it will be well worth it in the end.

Reading :: Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. I haven’t seen the movie yet because I wanted to read the book first, and the story is just as good as everyone says. I’m about a third of the way in, and enjoying every page. I’m also reading Bad Feminist by Roxanne Gay, which is a collection of essays. I’m really enjoying this too, her commentary is both apt and witty, and it’s a pretty quick read. I’ll probably go back and re-read some of my favourites at the end.

Listening :: To The Minimalists podcast, which is excellent, although I’m not sure to what degree I identify with some of their notions of minimalism. The episodes I’ve heard so far are really engaging and fascinating, though, so it’s well worth a listen.

What have you been knitting, reading, and listening to this week?

On another note, I am saddened to say goodbye to the Yarn-Along – I have met so many friends and discovered so many blogs through it. Thank you, Ginny, for many years of fun! Other than the wonderful Crafting On, what are you favourite knitting link ups right now? I will miss the online knitting circle that inspired my ‘lately’ posts.

WIPs and stitch markers

I finished my socks a few days ago (photos to come!) and immediately cast on another project… what else is a knitter to do when it’s -15 degrees and snowing?

This yarn is Red Heart Super Saver in Soft White- I usually hate plasticky acrylics like this, especially for larger projects, but I had a gift card for Michaels and at 700+ yards for 5$, I figured I would give this a try. I really hope it softens up when I wash it, because right now it’s pretty terrible.

I’m making Miette, which is a free pattern for a cropped cardi with a lace detail around the edge. I’m also ready to divide out for the sleeves and body. I’m loving how it’s turning out so far!

Yarn-Along

This is going up a bit later in the day then my usual yarn-along posts, but I’ve been getting back into the rhythm of classes and readings and life in the big city.

I’ve been working on these socks for a few weeks now (I cast them on on New Year’s day). The pattern is Kai-Mei, from Cookie A.‘s book Sock Innovation- I’m loving it so far, the cuff is simple but there is just enough lace on the foot to add some interest. I’m using Cascade Heritage Sock in the colour 5627 Jade (a Christmas gift from my mum). I wasn’t sure about the colour at first (it doesn’t look anything like the website photo), but I’m loving it now… it’s perfect for this pattern!

I’ve finished the first sock and started the second, which is working up much faster than the first. I can’t wait to wear them! See them here on Ravelry.

Ravellenics 2012 recap

As of Sunday, the Olympics, and therefore the Ravellenic games, are over! I finished a total of 5 (five!) projects during the games this year, and got a head start on my Christmas knitting. Not bad considering it’s only August!

I figured I would do a recap post with all of my Ravellenics projects in case you missed one (or two, or all) of them. Info for each in under the photo, along with related links.

In Progress: Saroyan

I’ve just got a quick post for today, and then I’ll probably disappear until the weekend. I’m working on some other things, and I’ll be out for town for the day on Thursday (more about that when I get back!).

When I finished my baby knits, rather than finish up one of the projects I’ve already started, I cast on for a new one. Typical…

It’s Saroyan by Liz Abinante. The leaves along the edge of this are just gorgeous. One of my Dad’s colleagues was wearing this recently and it was so pretty, I had to make one of my own.

It’s made with Stag Ranch Aran in Heliotrope, by Rocky Mountain Dyeworks. The yarn was a Christmas gift and it is lovely. I like that it’s from an independent Canadian company.

Since I only have 340 yards of yarn, I’ll have to do a bit of math to make it work, but the pattern is written so that making changes is really easy.

The two skeins that I have are a slightly different colour, even though they are the same colourway. I know that this happens with hand dyed yarn, so I’m not worried about it, but I’ve been alternating the skeins every two rows to make the entire scarf look more uniform. I’m actually really liking the variegated effect it’s creating!

(My Saroyan is on Ravelry here.)

I’ll be yarn-alonging with Ginny at Small Things tomorrow.

Have a great week!
